One of the most common methods of cleaning the air is by using the standard pleated paper filter. The paper filter element has pleats like an accordion. The paper element filters are disposable after each use.

Filtering Systems - Changing Your AIr Filter on a Forced Hot Air Heat and Air Conditioning System

Why and How to Change Filters

Dirty air filters destroy your forced hot air heat and air conditioning systems. By having a dirty air filter your central forced hot air and air conditioning systems will have to work harder to try to keep your home hot or cool. The system is trying to blow air through filters that are clogged on the air return side of the system. Also the air quality in the home will decrease. Changing your air filters are an inexpensive way to help your system perform at its best.

Studies show that indoor air pollution is one of the top five environmental health risks. We know it’s the last thing on your mind, but this is really important to do this on a consistence basis. Changing the air filters is not all that hard to do. The edge of the filter generally can be seen from the outside most systems. On some systems the front door will have to be opened up to find the air filter. Once found the filter should slide right out. Pay attention to the little arrow on the side of the filter. Match the size of the filter at Home Depot or Lowes and replace the filter with the little arrow pointing the same way the old filter was when you removed it.

But here are usually two challenges to actually completing this job:

  1. Knowing just how often to change your furnace or air conditioner filter.
  2. Remembering to change air filters when needed.

When to Change Your Air Filters

This is not a trick. When your air filters are dirty, change them. Choosing how often to change your air filters can depend on several factors:

  • Type of filter you are using in your system.
  • Pets – Birds, cats, dogs, etc.
  • Are you a smoker?
  • Are you an allergenic?
  • Number of occupants in the house.
  • How often you dust or clean your home?

For your typical pleated disposable air filter, the manufacturer specs basically say to change them bi-monthly. This a great rule of thumb. However, general guidelines are not applicable to all. If you have to tolerate light to moderate allergies, you may need to upgrade the air filter or change them even more regularly.

On the other hand, if you’re in a remote area or own a infrequently occupied home (like a vacation home) replacing your air filters once a year may be quite sufficient. Why do pets matter so much? They have a tendency to shed, which can clog your air filter fast. Clearly, the air filter is just doing its job by capturing pet hair and dander.
